NHRC is due to investigate a former prosecutor (11-14-2002)

The NHRC is due to investigate officials in the Seoul District Public Prosecutor"s Office who have been accused of violating human rights (11-14-2002)


The National Human Rights Commission, which has the authority to investigate state agencies and officials, is due to investigate respondents-including a former investigator who was identified as Hong-regarding the incident in which a man was killed while being held in the prosecutors office on 14 November.


After finishing the investigation of respondents in the Seoul District Public Prosecutor"s Office, the NHRC is supposed to hear the statement of Jang and Choi, who had beendetained in custody during the process of the prosecution"s investigation.


The NHRC has heard statements from one of the alleged victims-identified as Jang-on two separate occasions. The NHRC has also heard a statement from another alleged victim, by the name of Choi, who filed a complaint with the Commission while he was being sought by the police. 


Meanwhile, on 13 November, other investigators from the NHRC visited the SungDong Detention House and heard the statement of the former investigator who is in custody as a result of this incident. The ex-prosecutor Hong answered the investigators questions for 3 hours.


The NHRC is examining to consider comparing the statements of complainants with answers of the former prosecutor Hong and the results of on-site inspection in the Seoul District Public Prosecutor"s Office.  The NHRC will launch to investigate the persons concerned in the Seoul District Public Prosecutor"s Office within this week.
