NHRCK and UNHCR to Co-Host Workshop on Refugee Human Rights

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK), in association with the office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Korea, will hold a workshop on the protection of the human rights of refugees on October 23, 2007.
The workshop will focus on a variety of topics surrounding the human rights of refugees. Some of these topics include the basic principles for protecting the human rights of refugees, outstanding issues concerning the human rights of refugees and migrants in Korea and the Asia-Pacific, international norms and global standards for handling refugee cases, refugee issues in detention facilities and counseling methods.  
The UNHCR Representative in Korea, Janice Marshal, J.D., and the Protection (Legal) Officer of the UNHCR Seoul, Mamadou Dian Balde, Ph.D., will serve as key speakers.
This workshop aims to provide and facilitate knowledge about and skills pertaining to the investigation of alleged violations of refugee human rights, international norms and criteria for human rights.
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea was established in 2001, offering investigation and remedy services for Korean citizens and foreigners residing in Korea against human rights violations and discrimination. The Commission provides policy recommendations and remedial action against human rights infringements, collaborates with international human rights organizations and implements educational programs to improve the human rights culture.
