NHRCK Recommends Ratification and Signing of the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance
In January 2008, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) recommended to the minister of foreign affairs and trade to ratify and sign the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearance (“International Convention”).
The International Convention was adopted in the 61st session of the United Nations General Assembly on December 20, 2006.  It is the latest international human rights convention adopted by the UN and epitomizes the international community’s wishes to protect and promote human rights by preventing enforced disappearance and putting an end to the widespread failure to exact necessary punishments.
The NHRCK made said recommendation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade in the belief that the Convention will help uphold human dignity and value as a device that deters criminal violations by government agencies and their employees against human rights.
