NHRCK Welcomes the ROK’s Reelection as a Member of the UN Human Rights Council
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK; Chairperson Kyong-Whan Ahn) hails the Republic of Korea’s reelection for a three-year term as a member of the UN Human Rights Council. The Republic of Korea won 139 votes in an election by 192 UN members held at the UN headquarters on May 21, 2008.
Six countries ran for the four seats reserved for Asia, and the Republic of Korea, Japan, Bahrain, and Pakistan were elected. It is of particular significance that the Republic of Korea, which served as a first-term member of the Human Rights Council from 2006 to 2008, gained credit for its activities.
With regard to the Republic of Korea’s reelection to the Human Rights Council, the international community has apparently recognized the country’s firm determination for thorough implementation of international human rights protection treaties that it ratified, human rights protection for vulnerable classes and minorities, and proactive efforts to join the international community’s initiatives to protect and promote human rights.
The NHRCK expects that the government will actively fulfill the commitments it voluntarily made during its candidacy as a member of the Human Rights Council and make a coordinated effort with the international community.
The NHRCK, for its part, will do its best to help safeguard and enhance human rights at home and abroad and help the Republic of Korea become an advanced nation in terms of human rights as a state agency in charge of Korean nationals’ human rights improvement and promotion.
