NHRCK (AHN, Kyong-Whan, Chairperson) held a discussion forum on August 6, 2008 on “Human Rights and Import of American Beef” in order to discuss human rights issues related to the import of American Beef.
U.S.-Korea negotiations on beef import encompass diverse human rights issues such as people’s right to eat safe food and the right to health. It also holds important implications for the process of collecting public opinion and the relationship between human rights standards and trade laws. Therefore, through the discussion forum, NHRCK attempted to thoroughly examine and evaluate the U.S.-Korea beef import negotiations in the framework of international standards and procedural legitimacy.
Specifically, the discussion was focused on the relationship between the U.S. beef import and international human rights and trade norms from the perspective of the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights that contains the right to maintain the highest level of health.
