Yoo, Nam-Young, standing commissioner of the NHRCK will visit Kiryung Electronics where workers are participating in a long-term hunger strike on August 14th, at 2pm.
The decision to visit the site was made out of concerns about the conditions of the hunger strikers. Commissioner Yu will talk to the workers to understand the realities of the irregular workers’ and human rights conditions of minorities’.
Korean society has reached a state where irregular workers make up the majority of the work force. The proliferation of the irregular workers is leading to an increased polarization of the Korean society where these workers face increasingly harsh living conditions. This can be considered to be one of the most critical social issues that needs to be solved and the NHRCK is endeavoring to advocate the issue in the wider human rights context. The working conditions at Kiryung Electronic’s is not an isolated incident, but reflects only one type of problem concerning irregular workers. It relates to a larger task that Korean society has to resolve pertaining to irregular workers.
Commissioner Yu’s visit will be an opportunity to assess  the human rights situation of the workers. By listening to the workers and gathering opinion, the NHRCK will
reflect the actual situation of the workers into its activities and agenda and actively pursue these issues by developing human rights policies.
