On September 22, 2008, the 19th Plenary Committee Meeting determined to establish ‘North Korean Human Rights Special Committee’ which will be constituted by 3 to 5 Commissioners.
In light of strengthening capabilities in dealing with North Korean Human Rights, the Commission had discussed the establishment of the North Korean Human Rights Special Committee during the 7th and 18th Plenary Committee Meetings on April 14 and September 8, 2008. The Committee will investigate issues related to human rights in North Korea and report them to the Plenary Committee Meeting and the members will be appointed by the Chairperson in October.
Meanwhile, in January 2006, the Commission had established the Committee with 5 Commissioners under the decision from the 26th Plenary Committee Meeting held in December 2005.
