The NHRCK and Korean NeuroPsychiatric Association co-hosts international forum on ‘Mental Health Situation and Social Stigma in Korea from an International Perspective’ on World Mental Health Day. This 3rd international forum in regards to country report on the mentally disabled invites Dr. Norman Sartorius, professor of Geneva University and former Director, Division of Mental Health, World Health Organization(WHO) and will focus on the mental health service, anti-stigma campaigns for the mentally disabled and international perspectives of the rights of the mentally disabled.
The mentally disabled in Korea are vulnerable to extensive discrimination and human rights violations such as involuntary or unnecessary long-term hospitalization. To protect the mentally disabled from stigma, discrimination and exclusion and to prevent the human rights violation and discrimination, a policy should be enacted which provides better treatment for them through improvement of mental health services and legal system.
Meanwhile, the 1st international forum, under the title of ‘Mental Health Paradigm Changes for the Promotion and Protection of the Mentally Disabled’, focused on mental health problems in Korea and necessity of the National Report and the 2nd international forum emphasized the possible solutions for involuntary and long-term hospitalization and the protection from local communities.
