The 5th International Symposium on North Korean Human Rights was held on October 29 and 30. During the welcoming remarks of the symposium, Chairperson AHN Kyong-Whan said, “To improve North Korean human rights, the NHRCK is carrying out various activities such as research on actual conditions and policy studies on the status of human rights in North Korea, human rights realities of North Korean defectors residing in foreign countries, human rights matters of Korean soldiers held captive in North Korea, Korean abductees, and separated families, and human rights improvement for Saetoemin, or new settlers who have moved to South Korea after defecting from North Korea.” He also said, “For the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which is called the most beautiful promise of human beings, this International Symposium has special meaning in that it is not only a “field for discussion” at the international cooperation level to solve North Korean human rights matters through a realistic and actual approach, but also a “field of opportunity” that can lead to actual plans for North Korean human rights issues.”
