The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) conducted a ‘Human Rights-Friendly Report and TV Programs Search Project’ and selected 10 representative human rights reports for 2008. The project is intended to raise continuous human rights awareness of the press and to produce programs which promote human rights protection.

A total of 76 reports (46 broadcasted programs, 27 newspaper articles, and 3 internet reports) were proposed as human rights-friendly news reports or TV programs and among them, 5 broadcasted programs, 4 newspaper reports, and 1 internet report were finally selected as the ‘Ten Human Rights Friendly Reports of 2008.’ The Commission selected the reports that sought out neglected human rights problems; reinterpreted social, economic, and cultural phenomena with human rights perspectives; and contributed to the promotion of human rights through consistent production of human rights-relevant reports.

Rights of persons with disabilities, including those enumerated in the Anti-Discrimination Against and Remedies for Persons with Disabilities Act (Disability Discrimination Act; DDA), and irregular workers’ problems have been a main focus in 2008. ‘In an era of 8 million irregular workers’ stood out in that it reported problems of irregular workers which represent one of the major problems in our society. ‘Visually impaired person passed the judicial examination, but he still faces obstacles when studying’ raised systematic concerns in higher education situation for the visually impaired.

Concerns about the rights of migrant women and migrant workers have increased steadily. ‘Brides sold for 10 million Won for marriage and 2 million Won for remarriage’ systematically addressed serious violations of the rights of migrant women. ‘One year after Yeosu Detention Center Fire’ was also highly evaluated; it reported on the forgotten rights of migrant workers after the fire incident at Yeosu migration detention center. Also, a citizen KO Ki-Bok wrote ‘Story of migrant workers’ and has regularly reported on migrant workers on the internet for 4 years. His articles led to improvement of the system and promotion of migrant workers’ rights.

Among human rights related reports, outstanding reports include ‘2008 Human rights report on sports and sexual violence’ and a series of ‘Human rights report of the mentally disabled.’ Two reports focused on neglected human rights problems in our society. ‘Public Toilets, Please’ also reported the rights of laborers who have to work in a standing position and reviewed our daily lives in human rights perspectives.

‘60 years after the Yeosun Incident - Lost Memories’ was also selected as one of the 10 Human Rights Friendly Reports for redressing local human rights problems. ‘Tears of W’ and 4 other reports reported global human rights problems and raised human rights awareness among Korean citizens. The Commission presented awards for the ‘10 Human Rights Friendly Reports of 2008’ on the 7th anniversary of the Commission on November 25, 2008.
