l    March 12 – International Workshop on Educational Alternatives to Corporal Punishment

 

In commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (“CRC”), the international workshop is organized to discuss international trends toward abolition of corporal punishment and alternative ways to discipline students, with participants from NGOs, teachers’ associations, and public officials in charge of children’s issues.

 

International experts include Mr. Peter Newell, a member of the Advisory Panel for the UN Secretary General’s Study on Violence Against Children, who will deliver a keynote address on the implementation of the CRC. Ms. Dominique Plateau, from Save the Children, will be sharing anti-corporal punishment legislations in the Asia Pacific region.

 

l    March 20, 25 – Visitors from Japan and China

 

Six visitors from Kinki University will have a discussion with the NHRCK on the future establishment of a Japanese national human rights institution on March 20. The participants will be introduced to the process through which the NHRCK was established.

 

Following the Japanese visitors, on March 25, eight members from the China Law and Development Consultants group (“CLD”) will be visiting the NHRCK with a purpose to study Korean approaches to eliminating discrimination. The delegation will be led by Prof. Ye Jingyi of Peking University Law School.

 

l    March 21 – Celebration of the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

 

To celebrate the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the NHRCK is organizing ‘Rice Ball Concert’, a free concert open to everyone. Chairperson Ahn will deliver a commemorative speech and the guests will be served rice balls in various colors that represent a multicultural society.
