May 1 - The NHRCK issued a recommendation calling on four regional police agencies to eradicate assaults and harassment in the bases of the combat and auxiliary police (CP and AP).
The recommendation urges that the Commissioner-General of Korea National Police Agency (KNPA) should strengthen human rights monitoring, prevent beatings and harassment, and establish regular educational sessions on human rights for the supervisors of the CP and AP. The Commissioner-Generals of the regional police agencies have to take a disciplinary action against those who commit assaults and harassment.
On March 30, the KNPA and its regional police agencies announced that they would actively try to stamp out the assault and harassment by rewarding the bases with no harassment issues; stipulating the prohibition of harassment; and holding regular session for human rights education. Also, regional police agencies announced their implementation of disciplinary action and special training for those charged with assault or harassment.
