May 7 - The NHRCK established “Human Rights Protectors for the Aged” which consists of 79 elderly members on May 7, 2009. The protectors will be in charge of volunteer activities which help elderly people in Seoul, Busan, Gwangju and Daegu once a week from May to September this year. They will also monitor human rights violations and discrimination against elderly people, and will suggest measures to be taken to improve human rights of elderly people.

The protectors were selected based on their voluntary work experiences for elderly people. Among them are retirees from public, educational and private sectors.

The NHRCK has selected “protection of human rights for children and elderly people” as one of its five “Human Rights Action Plan,” and commenced a human rights project for elderly people.
