l       May 29- Standing Commissioner Choi Kyong-Suk, Yoo Nam-Young and Moon Kyung Ran attended the funeral ceremony of the Korea’s former President Roh Moo-Hyun, which was held at Gyeong-Bok Palace on May 29. President Lee Myeong-bak and former President Kim Dae-Jung attended the funeral, as well.

Former President Roh Moo-Hyun has emphasized the importance of protecting human rights during his tenure of office.

During his inaugural address, Roh said, “I will make a full effort to remove all kinds of unreasonable discrimination.” When the NHRCK directly criticized the government and Roh about the deployment of Korean troops to Iraq, Roh remarked, “Controversy between the NHRCK and the government is supposed to happen in a democratic society.”

Roh has constantly proclaimed the government’s responsibilities to protect the rights of minorities, with a full awareness of the function and the role of the NHRCK as an independent organization.

l       June 13- Chairperson Ahn Kyong-Whan appeared on a KBS TV show the “Love Request,” to promote the issues of human rights. “Love Request” is a charity TV program that introduces the lives of social minorities, and asks the audience for donations.

On the show, the stories consisted of a two-year-old baby suffering from cancer, a dad suffering from leukemia, and a teenager suffering from a fibrous tumor.

Chairperson Ahn referred to the rights of children, the rights to health and the Disability Discrimination Act, and pledged further efforts of the NHRCK. He also asked for a social interest in the protection of minorities’ rights.
