Date : 2009.09.09 00:00:00 Hits : 1894

August 6 - In light of a serious human rights violation during the long confrontation between the Ssangyong Motors and its labor union, the NHRCK decided to provide emergency relief to the union members on strike. In its statement, the NHRCK urged the Commissioner of Gyeonggi Provincial Police Agency to immediately stop the violent suppression of Ssangyong Motors union members.

The NHRCK’s investigation shows that many of union members were injured and that the cutting off of water, medicine, and food supplies put their health at risk. The union members were isolated in the factory for 70 days.

Given the fact that the police have a responsibility to respect human rights of all citizens when they are on duty and that many injuries were reported, the NHRCK decided to provide emergency relief to the union members and urged both the Ssangyong Motors and the union members to peacefully resolve this matter.
