December 8- Melanne Verveer, Ambassador-at Large for Global Women’s Issues of the U.S., will visit Korea and deliver a speech titled, “Women’s Rights are Human Rights: Progress since Beijing and Looking Forward.” The speech, which will be held on December 8 (from 10 am to 11:30 am) at the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK), is co-organized by the NHRCK and the Embassy of the United States in Korea. It will be open to the public.
The unprecedented position, Ambassador-at Large for Global Women’s Issues of the U.S. was first created by President Barack Obama. This position vows to coordinate foreign policy issues and activities relating to the political, economic and social advancement of women around the world. It is also to mobilize concrete support for women's rights and political and economic empowerment.
Melanne Verveer was appointed as Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues by President Barack Obama on March 7, 2009. Ambassador Verveer most recently served as Chair and Co-CEO of Vital Voices Global Partnership, a non profit international organization that invests in emerging women leaders and works to expand women's roles in generating economic opportunity, promoting political participation and safeguarding human rights. Prior to her work with Vital Voices, Ambassador Verveer served as Assistant to the President and Chief of Staff to the First Lady in the Clinton Administration and was chief assistant to then-First Lady Hillary Clinton. She also led the effort to establish the President's Interagency Council on Women. Prior to her time in the White House, Ambassador Verveer served in a number of leadership roles in public policy organizations and as legislative staff.
