Airport Full-Body Scanners Could Infringe Upon Human Rights

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) recommended the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs ban installation of airport full-body security devices (full-body scanners) over concerns about violation of human rights.

The NHRCK, regarding the installation of full-body scanners at international airports, viewed that it is highly influential to the privacy for the people. Furthermore, it has not been proved whether the security devices practically contribute to effective countermeasures against terrorism, and the legal basis of the installation is still disputable.

In addition, the NHRCK concluded that it is obvious that the full-body search devices could infringe on the privacy and freedom of individuals, the personal information could be disclosed, and the discriminatory actions could occur on the basis of race and religion in operating the devices.
