On June 21, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) held International Symposium on the Practical Application of Istanbul Protocol in Korea in commemoration of the UN International Day in Support of Torture Victims, inviting IRCT (International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims, Copenhagen).
The Istanbul Protocol, as official guidelines of UN, provides a set of guidelines for the assessment of persons who allege torture and ill treatment, for investigating cases of alleged torture, and for reporting such findings to the judiciary and any other investigative body.
The International Symposium was to introduce international attention and legal mechanism of torture to Korea, as part of promoting the ratification of the Optional Protocol. In addition, the symposium also called for attention to the treatment and rehabilitation of the victims of torture, as well as the development of effective remedies in cooperation with the international community.
