NHRCK Organized a Seminar on Disclosure and Protection of Personal Information
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) organized a seminar on ‘Disclosure and Protection of Personal Information’ on June 29, 2011. The purpose was to discuss the issue of targeted disclosure of personal information and social network services and to develop a mechanism and human rights culture for privacy protection on the Internet.
The privacy issue on the Internet has been spotlighted in recent months as the personal information of certain individuals was targeted for public disclosure through social network sites.
The NHRCK recognized that it was necessary to examine the issue of the right to privacy and to prepare a mechanism for privacy protection, reflecting the increase of violation cases and the extent of their severity. The NHRCK is organizing a series of seminars on information and communications technologies (ICT) and human rights, which will be held in 5 seminars through August 2011. Starting off with the seminar on the disclosure and protection of personal information, the series will address the issues of the right to enjoy culture, to participate in cultural life and to benefit from technological and scientific progress; the collection and leak of personal data; vulnerable groups and their rights to access information technology; and parody and the extent and limits of the right to freedom of opinion and expression.
