The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) recommended the Minister of Education, Science and Technology to revise elementary, middle and high school textbooks in compliance with human rights standards.

The NHRCK organized a group, consisted of school teachers and pupils, to assess the degree of respect for human rights in the textbooks on May 1, 2011for the 3 month periods. The group found out that some contents are incompatible with human rights values or they have discriminatory implications against the socially vulnerable. For example, they portrayed girls and boys with stereotypical gender images and conveyed discriminatory perception of socially and economically vulnerable groups.

The assessment and monitoring was conducted, based on the human rights standards enshrined in domestic laws and international human rights treaties such as the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).
