Since its inception in 2001, the NHRCK has been actively providing human rights education in an effort to prevent human rights violations and discriminatory acts and promote human rights culture.
In recognition for the important role of human rights education in preventing human rights violations and discriminatory acts in the long-term and in promoting equity and sustainable development, the international community including the United Nations has developed a variety of programs to support nations promoting human rights education.
The NHRCK joined such international move by developing educational programs for teachers, public officers, journalists, human rights advocacy groups, the socially marginalized and launching the Human Rights Education Centers to expand educational opportunities.
With increased public interest in human rights, a total of 124,937 people took the NHRCK’s education courses, a jump by 9% from a year earlier.
In an effort to improve access to human rights education, the NHRCK opened the Cyber Human Rights Education Center website (edu.humanrights.go.kr) through which it provides a variety of education courses and contents. The education courses currently available on the website include the introduction to human rights, human rights and public administration, prevention of disability discrimination and sexual harassment, and the introduction to the Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination of Disabled Persons. The NHRCK plans to expand its courses to include the introduction to discrimination and the military and human rights in 2013 and Police and human rights, migrants and human rights, and intellectual disabilities and human rights in 2014.
The website is open to anyone for visit and participation.
