o The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) established an "On-site Monitoring Group"(hereinafter the "Group") for monitoring and correcting discrimination against disability in a daily life.
Subsequently, 165 members in total of the Group will monitor the effective implementation of the Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination against Disabled Persons, Remedy against Infringement of Their Rights, Etc. (hereinafter "Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination against Disabled Persons") nationwide starting from Jeju City on 24 April for 3 months.
o Since the entry into force of the Act on the Prohibition of Discrimination against Disabled Persons in 2008, individual petitions in relation to discrimination against disability increased to 95 cases per month from 8.5 cases, 10 times more than before. However, discrimination against disability in daily life still exist.
- The most frequently received complaints regarding discrimination against disability are about the use of service or goods, 1,009 cases (15.4%) out of 6.540, IT and communications 947(14.5%), access to facility 881(13.5%), insurance?finance service 483(7.4%), transportation 436(6.7%), and culture?art?sports 274(4.2%).
- Specific cases illustrate the most frequent discrimination by types of disability is "access to facility and transportation'" in case of physical disability, and "assistance to IT and commications in case of visual impairment.
o The NHRCK operates the On-site Monitoring Group since 2009 includng persons with disability. This year, 108 of the 2014 On-site Monitoring group will monitor △access to facility in a public library and legitimate provision of service△ monitor the access to high profile facilities such as banking or medical service △provision of access and legitimate service for persons with disabilities in accordance with features of region such as public tourist spots in Jeju city and public institutions in Sejong City
o The NHRCK will continuously make efforts to correct problems about discrimination against disability occuring on a daily basis via establishment and operation of the 2014 On-site Monitoring Group.
