Chairperson visited the Immigration Foreigner Supporting Center

o The Chairperson of the NHRCK paid a visit to the Immigration Foreigner Supporting Center in Incheon and heard voices of those in need including pregnant refugee status applicant and children on 12 June.

 

o As a commemoration of the World Refugee Day and celebration of the first anniversary of the enforcement of the Refugee Act, the NHRCK delegation made a visit to the Center and met people there so that positive activities to promote and protect refugee rights can be encouraged.

 

o The Immigration Foreigner Supporting Center is a place where a refugee status applicant can stay and receive support for living and a refugee can obtain education for resocilization and settlement in accordance with Article 45 of the Refugee Act and Article 19 of its Enforcement Ordinance. It was established last September and operated since February this year.

 

o The Republic of Korea joined the Refugee Cponvention and its protocol in 1992. In addition, the Refugee Act is now in force since 2012.

 

o The NHRCK has been conducting joint projects with the UNHCR Korean and NGOs such as on-site research on the rights of refugee, a forum on integrity of refugees with the society, counsel on human rights issues with refugees and etc since its establishment.

 

o The NHRCK will actively incorporate international standards into national policy on refugee based on the voices from the Center and opinions of related public officials and continue to pay attention to rights of refugee in Korea.
