Celebrating 66th anniversary of the UDHR
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (Chairperson Hyun Byung-chul) hosted a commemorative event on 10 December 2014 to celebrate the 66th anniversary of adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The Universal Declaration of Human Rights was adopted on December 10, 1948 as a universal standard applied to every individual and state for realization of human dignity and value. The NHRCK hosts commemorative event every year in order to remember the noble meaning and spirit of the UDHR.
For this year's celebration, President Park Geun-hye sent congratulatory video remarks in which she said that the UDHR is a beautiful promise of mankind, and human rights are universal rights that everyone should enjoy to live with dignity. She also said that North Koreans are faced with unspeakable human rights circumstances, and asked for everyone's efforts to create the Korean peninsula where everyone can live with dignity and respect for life.
The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also sent video remarks to celebrate the event, in which he explained meaning of the 2014 Human Rights Day Slogan which is Human Rights 365. In addition, during the event, the Korea Human Rights Awards were given to 17 individuals and groups, who have dedicated themselves for promotion and protection of human rights in Korea,
The NHRCK would like to take this opportunity to express gratitude and respect to everyone around the world who are devoted for promotion and protection of human rights. We also wish today's event sever as an opportunity for all of us to remind the noble meaning of the UDHR.
