The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (Chairperson Hyun Byung-chul) recommended to the Marine Corps to revise its rule under which soldiers who failed to get Taekwondo certificates are restricted in obtaining permission for vacation and leave-days. The Marine Corps Headquarters accepted the recommendation and changed its rule which provides soldiers who have acquired various benefits.
The NHRCK concluded that even though education on Taekwondo is necessary to enhance combat power of the corps, it does not mean all soldiers are required to gain certificate, and it would be better to provide benefits rather than imposing administrative restrictions.
In response, the Marine Corps Headquarters accepted recommendation of the NHRCK and revised its rule on Taekwondo in February 2015. As a result, soldiers who failed to acquire certificates will not face administrative restriction including limit on a leave day or vacation, and rather, soldiers who acquired certificates will be provided with various benefits and rewards.
