Symposium on Human Rights of Older Persons

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(Chairperson Lee Sungho) in celebration of the Day of Older Persons hosted the 1st Symposium on Human Rights of Older Persons on 2 October, 2015.

 

The NHRCK, with the Korean Gerontological Society, co-hosted the symposium, where participants identified international trend on human rights of older persons and discussed pending issues including discrimination against and care for older persons.

 

At the Session 1, under the theme of Implementation of the MIPAA and International Trend and Issues on the Convention on Human Rights of Older Persons, panel discussion and debates were carried out. At the Session 2, participants discussed discrimination against and care for older persons, which are the pending issue in Korea.

 

In 2011, the UN Secretary General’s report stated that older persons are suffering from poverty, inadequate living condition, violence, abuse, age discrimination and lack of support. The international community has been devoting its efforts to strengthen international protection framework for older persons by adopting the first and second international plan of action on ageing.

 

The NHRCK carried out a series of researches on human rights situation of older persons and, based on the result of the researches, made a recommendation to related agencies for improvement of policies for older persons.
