NHRCK selected as a Chair of the Working Group on Aging of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions

Chairperson Sung-Ho Lee of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea was selected as a Chair of the Working Group on Aging of the Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions(GANHRI) at the Annual Meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland on March 22, 2016.  



 

The working group is composed of 8 NHRIs from Africa, Asia-Pacific, America and Europe and aims to discuss measures for international cooperation and enhancement of promotion and protection of human rights of older persons amidst global population ageing.

 

The Commission is expected to play at the center an important role in seeking measures for promotion and protection of human rights older persons.

 

The Commission believes that selection as a Chair reflects international community's evaluation on the Commission which strived and dedicated for promotion of human rights of older persons including successfully hosting the ASEM Conference on Global Ageing and Human Rights of Older Persons last year.

 

Chairperson Lee stated that with global population ageing, issues regarding human rights of older persons are what the international community should work together. He also added that the Commission will make its best efforts to cooperate with international community and to formulate measures to promote and protect human rights of older persons.  

 

Meanwhile, the International Coordinating Committee of National Human Rights Institutions, composed of 110 NHRIs changed its name to Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions at the Annual Meeting.
