NHRCK created a Sub-committee on rights of children

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea created a new sub-committee dealing with human rights infringements, discriminations and policies regarding rights of children. First meeting of the sub-committee will be held on 16 May.

 

Creation of this sub-committee is to implement recommendations from the UN Committee on Rights of Children and 2ND Universal Period Review and to promote and protect human rights of children.

 

The UN encouraged the Korean government to establish a sub-committee inside the Commission to exclusively deal with rights of children for several times including in the Concluding Observation on the 3rd and 4th State report on implementation of the UN CRC in 2011 and the 2nd UPR in 2012. The Korean government answered that it will accept the recommendation.

 

The Sub-committee on Rights of Children will consists of 3 commissioners including Standing Commissioner Kim Yeonghye, charing the Committee. The Committee will deliberate and decide on diverse cases including human rights infringements and discriminations whose victims are children aged under 18, visit protection facilities and review policy recommendation and expression to enhance human rights situation of children.

 

Creation of this sub-committee will lay a foundation for systemized activities for protection of rights of children along with the establishment of a Child/juvenile Human Rights Team in August, 2014.

 

Meanwhile, the number of complaints submitted to the Commission regarding rights of children continued to increase ever year, the for the last three years, the Commission receive 1459 cases and made diverse recommendations and expressions.
