The National Human Rights Commission of Korea initiates monitoring activities on public facilities to which persons with disabilities frequently visit. The purpose of the monitoring activities is to prevent and resolve discrimination against persons with disabilities.
The Commission has been carrying out monitoring activities since 2009 in a bid to prevent discrimination against persons with disabilities in all area and to promote practical implementation of the CRPD .
The Commission will designate 178 people including persons with disabilities for monitoring activities in 6 areas of Seoul, Gyeonggi, Busan, Gwangju, Dageu and Daejeon.
This year, persons with disabilities accounts for 66.9% of the monitoring group and they will review and monitor in detail whether the public facilities provide reasonable accommodation for persons with disabilities.
The monitoring group will visit postal office, employment center, department store and SSM to access accessibility and provision of reasonable accommodation for persons with disabilities. In particular, in cooperation with the DPI of Korea, it will review the right to safety of persons with disabilities at large-scale sales facilities at the time of disaster.
The Commission, based on the result of monitoring activities, will continue to make efforts to enhance accessibility of persons with disabilities and provision of reasonable accommodation including making recommendations to related institutions and facilities and improving related legislation and policies.
