The National Human Rights Commission of Korea initiated human rights counselling tour on the 13th Day for Persons with Hansen’s Disease at National Sorokdo Hospital.

The NHRCK provided counselling service for those who are suffering from prejudices and discriminations.

As for human rights of persons with Hansen’s Disease, the NHwRCK conducted a research on status of human rights, and made policy recommendation on May 2006 calling for enactment of a special act for

fact-finding of human rights infringements and discriminations against them, compensation and improvement of policies for persons with Hansen’s disease.

With recommendations from the NHRCK, we’ve witness some progress in protection of human rights of persons affected by Hansen’s disease and rectification of discrimination including enactment of the ACT on Inquiry into Human Rights Abuses Suffered by Persons Affected by Hansen’s Disease and on Providing Assistance to Such Victims.

However, measures to prevent human rights infringements against them and to provide remedy still lack behind. The NHRCK hopes that the counselling served as an opportunity to eliminate prejudice and discrimination against persons affected by Hansen’s disease.

The NHRCK will continue to make efforts to enhance perception on persons affected by Hansen’s disease and to better protect their human rights.
