The National Human Rights Commission of Korea expands cyber human rights training for government workers

The National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) announced recently a new human rights education center on the web for government officials and their workers. This website is part of the Commission’s initiative to provide practical human rights training in workplaces across the region.
Government officials hold much influence over civilians, given their status and responsibilities. The Commission has made it a priority to establish effective human rights training programs for these workers during 2007 and plans to further launch a refined version of the training in 2008 specifically for government-related work. The training is exclusively voluntary, and housed under the Central Officials Training Institute.
This cyber initiative by the NHRCK intends to remove past limitations that have hindered the growth of human rights training program for government workers, including time, transportation and cost. Training on the website introduces methods for preventing discrimination against the disabled and gender and sexual discrimination, as well as pages to introduce how the Commission defines human rights. Although the Commission has encouraged all people to increase their knowledge of human rights, the Commission hopes that cyber training will provide a more convenient means of communication and education.
Previous initiatives for civilian human rights education have been offered since 2005 with relative success. These programs are offered for schoolteachers, students and other civilian communities, reaching over 1,000 in the late half of 2006.
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea was established in 2001 to promote human rights education and defend those who have experienced discrimination, or have had a right violated, in Korea. The Commission offers counseling, full investigation and protection for citizens, along with educational initiatives for organizations.
