Workshop for Young Human Rights Activists in Asia Held
On February 20 – 22, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) held the 4th Workshop for Young Human Rights Activists at the International Studies Hall of Korea University in conjunction with the Asia Center for Human Rights, Korea University Graduate School of International Studies, and the UN Office of High Commissioner for Human Rights Regional Office for South-East Asia.
Sixty Korean and foreign youths aged 17 through 30 who have interest in human rights, including foreign students, North Korean defectors attending universities, and migrants from the Jumma Tribe, a minority in Myanmar, participated in this workshop, which followed the 3rd Asia Human Rights Forum on regional human rights cooperation for migrant children in Asia. The participants received wide-ranging human rights education and training provided by domestic and foreign scholars, activists, and international organization officers including those from the NHRCK. The workshop was an opportunity to them to further develop as competent human resources who can help improve human rights conditions in Asia.
This workshop was especially important since migrants’ human rights constitute an issue that cannot be resolved by individual countries and urgently require a concerted regional effort.
