The National Human Rights Commission of Korea hosted the commemoration ceremony of the Human Rights Day in 2018 to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at the Seoul Anglican Church on December 10 where President Moon Jaein of the Republic of Korea and more than 400 people including diplomatic representatives, civil society organizations and religious leaders attended.
The Seoul Anglican Church is N.35 Tangible Cultural Asset of the Seoul Metropolitan City and is the place where the democratic uprising in June 1987 began. The Church was chosen as a ceremony place to recall the meaning of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
On December 10, every year, in commemoration of the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a memorial ceremony is held in each country to recall the spirit of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The UDHR is a historic declaration that sets common standards for all nations and all people to realize the value of human dignity and respect.
This year, the ceremony was moderated by actor Kwon Haehyo and was composed of pre-ceremony performance of the Seoul Metropolitan Junior Chorus, 70 times of bell ringing in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the UDHR, showing related video, reading of 30 articles of the UDHR, opening remarks of Chairperson of NHRCK, the Korean Human Rights Award, and commemorative performance by the soprano Lim Seonhye.
The 2018 Korea Human Rights Award(National Medal of the Mugunghw Shrine) was presented to the late National Assembly member Roh Hoechan for contributing to the promotion of human rights of workers, women and people with disabilities.
Chairperson Choi Youngae of the NHRCK said, “Refugees who have escaped form fear of war and hunger are becoming increasingly rejected by online and SNS. Women are exposed to the threat of digital sex crimes beyond physical violence and hatred against the elderly and children is becoming a routine.” She added, “It is a situation that requires national and regional measures to solve fundamental problems.” She also emphasized activities of the task force team on hatred and discrimination, efforts to enact a basic human rights act, and a need for enactment of an anti-discrimination act.
In commemorating the 70th anniversary of the UDHR, the NHRCK wishes to express its words of respect and appreciation to every one dedicated to the promotion and protection of the human rights and hopes that this event will serve as an opportunity to recall the noble significance of the UDHR.
