The NHRCK Chairperson attends
the 26th Annual General Meeting of the Asia Pacific Forum
The National Human Rights Commission of Korea(Chairperson Doohwan Song) attended the 26th Annual General Meeting of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions(APF), the virtual session held from September 15 to 16.
The APF, established in 1996, is a coalition of national human rights institutions with 25 members and holds Annual General Meeting.
The Annual General Meeting began with the greetings from the Chairperson of the APF Rosalind Croucher. Before adopting and proceeding the agenda, Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission provided an update on the dire situation in and around Afghanistan after the takeover of the Taliban.
On the first day(Sept 15) of the event, APF Performance Report(July 2020 to June 2021) was briefed, the current status of *‘Mainstreaming Gender Equality’ was discussed, the audited accounts for the period of 2020-2021 was adopted and the elections to nominate APF Governance Committee representative, alternate APF representative to GANHRI Bureau and APF nominee for GANHRI Chairperson position were proceeded.
The NHRCK Chairperson, on the first day of the meeting, was elected as a representative to the APF Governance Committee. Chairperson Song will be serving as a committee representative until September 2022. The APF Governance Committee makes recommendations to the APF General Assembly on a range of issues including strategic planning, membership application and changes to the Rules and Procedures.
On the second day(Sept 16), the report on ‘Women and girls’ sexual and reproductive health rights in crisis’ was presented by the UN Working Group on Discrimination Against Women and Girls, followed by a discussion.
*’Mainstreaming Gender Equality’ is a concept first introduced at the World Conference on Women 1985, held in Nairobi. It is a tool to evaluate the level of Gender Equality Perspective in the process of organization, development and policy making in institutions so that gender equality can be well incorporated into all levels of policy and decision making process.
