NHRCK Holds Briefing Session on Its UPR Submission for Diplomatic Missions in Korea
NHRCK report identifies key human rights issues of Korea for upcoming UPR Working Group session of the UN Human Rights Council
On 12 January 2023, the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK) held a briefing session on its Universal Periodic Review (UPR) report for diplomatic missions in Seoul, ahead of the country’s 4th cycle of review at the 42nd session of UPR Working Group of the United Nations Human Rights Council.
The UPR is a key mechanism of the UN Human Rights Council that regularly reviews the human rights records of UN Member States and presents recommendations on issues that require improvement. The Republic of Korea underwent the UPR in 2008, 2012 and 2017, and the next review is scheduled for 26 January 2023.
The UPR is conducted based on the national report prepared by the State, stakeholders’ reports by the national human rights institution and civil society organizations, and other information. The NHRCK submitted its independent report for UPR to the United Nations in July 2022. The report outlines key human rights challenges in South Korea and proposes recommendations to be considered by the UN Member States.
The briefing session was organized to give an overview of the NHRCK’s UPR report to foreign missions in Korea. It was attended by 46 diplomats from 43 embassies in Seoul.
At the briefing session, the NHRCK asked for cooperation and support from the countries present to ensure that the proposals contained in the NHRCK’s UPR report lead to actual UPR recommendations during the upcoming UPR Working Group session.
